Going to Miss Cecily Tynan as She Retires from 6ABC Action News

If you grew up in the Philadelphia area, you probably do not need much of an introduction to Cecily Tynan. For more than 30 years, she has been one of those familiar faces who seemed to simply belong on Channel 6. The funny thing is, Tynan was not even from Philadelphia. She grew up in Connecticut, graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1991 with degrees in journalism and politics, and began her television career in Virginia before moving on to Las Vegas. She arrived at 6abc in 1995, initially as a weekend weathercaster and general assignment reporter, and eventually became chief meteorologist. 

Tynan is retiring after a 35-year broadcasting career, most of it spent covering wild weather in and around Philadelphia. Somewhere along the way, Philadelphia stopped being the next stop on her career path and became home. That is pretty Philly. You can come here thinking you are just passing through, and before long the city has claimed you as one of its own. Now, after more than three decades of snowstorms, heat waves, hurricanes and those classic Philadelphia weather days when you can experience three seasons before dinner, Tynan has called it a career. Her final day at 6abc was August 31, 2026. 

And this is where the whole thing starts to feel a little strange for longtime viewers. We have seen this movie before. Jim Gardner left 6abc in 2022, and it felt odd not seeing that familiar face at the anchor desk. Tynan's departure has that same feeling, although she obviously has her own place in Philadelphia television history. After 31 years, people do not just watch you. They grow up with you. They see you during holidays, storms, school closings and ordinary nights at home. Cecily Tynan is getting something most television personalities never get: the chance to walk away on her own terms while she is still healthy enough to enjoy what comes next. Good for her. But make no mistake, Philadelphia is going to notice that she is gone. The weather forecast will still be there. It just will not feel quite the same.
