Merlin Broadcasting WWIQ, 106.9 FM (the home of the former Family Radio WKDN), has axed former embroiled CBS 3 TV news anchor Larry Mendte as the station's morning host.
This move is fueling rumors that the station may be up for sale. Merlin's Chicago station (WIQI 101.1 FM) is currently up for sale while it's former New York FM station at 101.9 was recently sold to CBS Radio. That station is the FM home of Sports Radio 66 WFAN. In those markets owner Randy Michaels tried an all-news formats on FM which failed miserably. In Philly of course he went with a talk format, which has been somewhat successful.
"As most of you know, I have not been on the air for the past week. I have been told that many of you have called the station asking where I am and I thank you for that. The truth is I am no longer working at IQ 106.9. It was not my choice and since my show was by far the highest rated local show I am certain this will fuel the industry rumors that the station is being sold. I hope that is not true as the station fills an important void." -Larry Mendte on facebook
Rumors are that CBS may buy 106.9 and simulcast KYW News Radio 1060 on the FM frequency.
Speaking of CBS Radio, their talk station 1210 WPHT has parted ways with afternoon host and author Buzz Bissinger. His former partner, veteran talk show host Steve Martarano is now working with a list rotating co-hosts in the afternoon following the Michael Smerconish Show. Souces say Bissinger resigned from WPHT following a spat with station management.
I can't believe this guy actually said "this will fuel rumors" the station will be sold because he was fired. Never listen to Medte anyway. His reputation is damaged forever. Good riddance!
ReplyDeleteMendte is the best!!! He was great on TV and even better on radio. He got tangled up with that train wreck Alycia Lane. I want Mendte back - good riddance to Lane.
